The Carettic Divorce was the division of eastern Carettia into the rival Scazzelari (lit. “the Serpentine ones”) and Vargazzi (lit. “the Lupine ones”) factions over the Second Shining Empire’s cession of territory and acceptance of reparation funds to the belligerent Evershining Empire. The Marziellani lamented the fact that their immense sacrifices to liberate eastern Carettia were for naught, and did not recognize the cession of hostilities when news of it arrived. Ultimately, they continued their advances until Drow resistance stiffened, angering the Evershining Elves and causing the promised payment to never be delivered.

Following this, the ZeuDeulers and their backers declared the Marquisate of Marziellana and Free City of Mirano guilty of high treason against the Empire, claiming that they had performed an act of war against a foreign power which was not hostile to the Empire at the time of the attack, any who stood alongside them would be crushed if they did not submit. With Carettic resistance to the dominance of the Teurechti People already mounting, the ultimatum backfired heavily- several smaller Carettic constituents of the Empire declared their support to the Marziellani and the Miranese, forming the Scazzelari. In response, the ZeuDeulers called upon their holdings in Carettia and any still loyal to the Empire, forming the Vargazzi.

Officially, the Scazzelari backed the Ecumenical Hieronate of the Seven’s interpretation of Holy War, under which the war would not be allowed to cease until satisfactory progress had been made in the expulsion of the enemies of The Myriad from Wudor. The Vargazzi rejected this interpretation, insisting that the terms of Arraignment between the Hieron and Shining Emperor afforded the Second Shining Empire the right to begin and end any conflict on it’s own terms.

In reality, the support bases of both sides drew largely from existing local grievances. The ZeuDeulers, a powerful Imperial family with great stakes in local commerce, lamented the growing independence of the Marquisate of Marziellana, as well as the degree of dominance the Free City of Mirano had attained over Carettia’s naval trade routes.
